Connecting ABI3100-PC to the Internet without an Anti-Virus Software
Because of risks of computer viruses and malwares, our institute decided to unplug PCs without an anti-virus software from the institute LAN system. The ABI3100-PC was also unplugged because it has no anti-virus service. It has been inconvenient to transfer sequence files and sample sheets with USB memory sticks.
A broad band router can work as a hardware firewall and intermediate the PC with an optional second network board and LAN system eliminating the risks. The PC will be invisible from outside. This time I tried to plug the Buffalo Technology model BBR-4HG broadband router with the following settings.
Set the global IP address of the router with the utility software supplied by the manufacturer.
Set the security level of the router to 'high'.
Use the attack-block function of the router. Check off notification services neither by e-mail nor pop-up function.
Use automated IP assignment for the PC's TCP/IP.
The PC is successfully connected to the institute LAN, and the internet as well. The windows network access and UNIX samba are disabled with these settings. Instead, WinSCP (http://www.tab2.jp/~winscp/) can transfer files between the PC and UNIX machines. In our lab, a LINUX machine serves to run phred/phrap/consed, and transfer of sequence files to and sample sheets from this machine improved handling of digital data.
